Manipur Day is celebrated on the 1st of August of every year. It
is the day when the entire city of Manipur is flooded with activities and
joyous celebrations. On this day, people from the nearby and neighboring
districts come to celebrate their joyous victory in the town's lottery. This
day is filled with immense happiness as the people of Manipur go through
several enjoyable activities such as shopping, eating, drinking and
sightseeing. The day is a complete blend of enjoyment and happiness and every
year, more tourists from far and wide come to the city for enjoying Manipur
Day.
Manipur Day has become very famous among the visitors who come
to the city to enjoy this happy event. It is one of the main draws of Manipur
tourism and this festive occasion has become highly anticipated by the people
of the city. The day is celebrated with great zeal and enthusiasm by the people
of all ages, castes and regions. The day is also marked as Madhur Bazaar or
Ratan Bazar where the whole city functions as a huge market and the largest
market of manipur day.
There are two main stages during which Manipur Day celebrations
are conducted. One is for the local people who gather at the bar area to
exchange gifts, buy new clothes, eat delicious food and participate in various
other community-oriented activities while the second stage includes the
dignitaries, foreign delegates, dignitaries, foreigners, police, railway
officials, media persons, film stars, musicians and film crews. The first stage
of celebrations starts as soon as the sun sets and it lasts till the morning
comes up. The second stage begins after the sun sets and goes on till the time
when the sun rises again.
There are several events which are organized by both the
government and the locals of the state for the pleasure and happiness of the
common people. There are various fairs and festivals, which are organized by
the civic society and the commercial societies of the city, and various
renowned personalities from both the Indian and foreign countries. The most famous
amongst these people are the Mumbai celebrities - the Bollywood, the Tollywood,
the Hindi movies and the other stars of the international film industries whom
we call the 'Mollywood'.
The chief highlight of the celebrations of Madhur day in Manipur
is the performance of the local singers and choreographers. The chief among
these choreographers is the Lateef Khan, who has choreographed the dance
routine of the chief minister of Manipur and his wife since almost three
decades. Other well-known choreographers include Sanjay Leela Bhansali, who has
choreographed some of the most important events of the Republic. Some of the
other famous choreographers of Manipur are Ram Gopal Varma, Subodh Gupta, H
Kamin, and Babu Raja. In fact, each and every year, different new faces from
the film industries of India as well as from the foreign countries take part in
the Manipur math contest to win the most popular celebrity award.
This year, the most popular award is that of the best actress
award which goes to Kangana Apu, who happens to be a fresh face in the
Bollywood industry. She has also won few Film Farewell Awards and Best
Supporting Actress in the same category. Another very interesting character of
Madhur morning is the first female winner of the best actress award. She is
Sushmita Sen. It is interesting to note that the prime minister of Manipur
along with his wife, both separately and together, have taken part in the satta
matka competition. The best part of this entire event is that the local people
of Manipur and their ancestors have turned the event into an expression of
their cultural pride. So, next time you celebrate Maduraursat, make sure you
pay a visit to the booth and give your own vote for the best Madur Matka.
